It's 5:30 here and we've been flying high for about two hours...my mom has been responding consistently to questions and commands. Jill is over there now, and she said that my mom is sticking out her tongue in response to questions like, "Are your legs uncomfortable?" She can't lift one finger at a time yet, but she can move her left arm or foot on command. Jill said that the nurse kept encouraging her to leave mom alone to sleep, but mom had her eyes wide open and would move her foot until Jill came over to talk to her.
So this is definitely an up on the emotional roller coaster. There is some kind of poetic justice to the fact that she mom can stick her tongue out at all of us now. :) She's certainly earned that right!

I've got tears of joy in my eyes from the good news! Janet, keep on healing. I'll keep praying for all of you. Today is the first time I've had a chance to read some of the comments. This sure is a great way to communicate our love & thoughts without being there.
Love & finger hugs,
Linda
Yeah Janet, keep up the good work. I feel like I may have to start attending a blogger anonymous group soon. I didn't know I could check a site so often. Thought I would send you a little funny to imagine. Yesterday was my birthday. Right after my husband wished me a happy birthday he said it was going to be a bad day. First Melanie decided to give me a poopy diaper with poop down to both her socks. Then after getting her cleaned up and clothed I showered. As I got out of the shower Melanie decided she wasn't done bathing and promptly climbed into my shower water. Fully clothed in brand new clothes... she had a blast. Then for further bonding Melanie decided she would skip her morning nap to spend more time with me. I would say her attitude from being so sleepy was less than enjoyable. The afternoon was better. I hope she is better at giving birthday presents next year.
Rocky is having a great time hanging out with us. He helped with irrigation chores and tried to assist Trapper in riding our field of pocket gophers and mice today. He went swimming in the irrigation ditch with Trapper too.
Love and lots of prayers, Emily
Hooray! We are so glad to hear that things are going better and that Janet is responding so well. You are still in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Leanne and Jake
What great news! Janet, have you been waiting to stick out that tongue all week? I bet so. Everyone rest well tonight, to be ready for the healing road ahead.
Love, Judy R.
I'm a tech geek some might say, I'm totally addicted to my blackberry, yet I have never been a blogger and some at my work have gotten fired for blogging, so being in charge of 20 people I frown upon it and discourage it. But right now I have made an EXCEPTION to my blog rule, and yes I'm at work, doubt this would get traced:) Ok did that distract you all or at least confuse you? I may be confusing myself at this point. Anyway Janet has been in mine and my families prayers daily. You are such an amazing family! I know your mom can hear everything you tell her and she can feel the support in the hospital room. Keep up the positive energy! Take care of each other and don't forget to breathe and relax as much as possible. You will need to keep up that energy.
Love to you all!
Lizzy
I'm so happy to hear Janet is responding so well. And in such a "Janetlike" fashion. You go girl!!! I have to agree that your blog is much better than computer games or novels. Maybe Brian can write a screenplay and submit it to Lifetime or Oxygen. It would be better than many things they put on tv. Give Janet a finger hug from me.
Love, Teresa Liu
ALRIGHT THAT IS MORE LIKE IT!!!
HOORAY! Way to go Janet! Keep it up!!

Jill is missing bookclub this very minute. While we are engrossed in family stories and not our book we have checked the bblog twice already. It isn't quite like having Jill with us but we are thinking of you all. We have 2 empty bottles of wine and some healthy but mostly unhealthy appetizers. We love you and hope all is well.
WAY TO GO! I just got home and ran to the computer. I did have some idea that wonderful things were happening--Bob checked his computer during the day from Montreal and then called Minnesota as my mom's house doesn't have a computer I can access.
I think I'll finally sleep thru the night without getting up to check the blog. Hope all you Hansens get a good night's sleep too.
Hey, do they allow Diet Coke with lots of ice in the ICU? I think Janet deserves a treat.

We're full of joy with you, and we'll keep up the good thoughts and prayers for building from here on this wonderful news! Tell Janet that when my daughter Carrie was 5, she broke her arm and had to be in traction in the hospital for 2 weeks before they could cast it. She took great pleasure in figuring out how to kick the doctor when he was checking on her traction! I'm not suggesting anything -- maybe stick with the tongue! We love you and are sending strength and hugs.
Carolyn
